Adam Whelan's descendants

The following tabulates the known descendants of Adam Whelan, for the two generations following his. I have records of subsequent generations of descendants, available to anyone specifically researching this family. There are many missing details, particularly for branches other than my own.

First Generation

1. Adam WHELAN. Born circa 1831 in Tipperary, Ireland. Immigrated in 1855 from Liverpool to Port Philip on the Schomberg. Died 4 Oct 1895 at 557 King St Melb. Buried 6 Oct 1895 in Melb General Cemetery R/C BB540.

He is believed to have married Mary McINERNEY in about 1853 in Tipperary, Ireland. Mary was born about 1836 in Ireland and died 15 Sep 1909 at 557 King St Melb West. Buried 17 Sep 1909 in Melb General Cemetery, R/C BB540.

Said to have married Adam Whelan at age 15 in Ireland, then worked as domestic servant in Melbourne for two years before Adam arrived. They had the following children:

2. Michael Joseph WHELAN. Son of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born 7 Nov 1856 in Melbourne . Died Sep 1938 in Thornbury, Aged 81. Buried in Melb General, R/C BB772. Occupation Tobacconist.

He married Catherine RUSSEL, daughter of John RUSSEL & Margaret McHUGH, 11 Aug 1882 in St Mary's RC Church, West Melbourne. Born 1862 in Castlemaine Vic. Died Feb 1933. Buried in Melb General, R/C BB772.

Irene Whelan's history indicates that Catherine "sang opera" and may have been known as "Nell". Marriage witnesses were William Cuthbertson Russel and Minnie Tobin. They had the following children:

3. Patrick WHELAN. Son of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born 20 Feb 1858 in Victoria. Died 1 Dec 1939 in Fitzroy aged 81. Buried Dec 1939 in Footscray Cemetery, R/C A984. Occupation Tobacco Worker.

He married Margaret CLANCY, daughter of Michael CLANCY & Margaret SCANLON, 14 Apr 1884 in St Mary's, West Melb. Born 1 Mar 1859 in Keilor. Died 2 Oct 1952 in Northcote aged 93. Buried in Footscray Cemetery, R/C A984. They had the following children:

6. John Thomas WHELAN. Son of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born 6 Jul 1863 in Spencer Street, Melbourne. Died 1936 in Caulfield aged 73. Birth register shows birth on 6 Jul 1863 - hence registered 8 months after the event. He married Sarah HALL, 1900. They had the following children:

8. Thomas Stephen WHELAN. Son of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born 1 Mar 1867 off Spencer St., Melbourne. Died 1922 in Melb W, aged 54. Buried in Melb General, R/C BB540.

9. Bridget Teresa WHELAN. Daughter of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born 1 Apr 1870 at 131 Lonsdale St., Melbourne. Died 6 Oct 1895 in West Melb. Buried in Melb General, R/C BB540.

10. Catherine WHELAN. Daughter of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born 20 Sep 1870 off Lonsdale St., Melbourne. Known as Kate She married Patrick GREEN, 1904. They had the following children:

12. Johanna WHELAN. Daughter of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born about 1874 in Melbourne. She married Jack JORDAN, in 1918.

13. Joseph Peter WHELAN. Son of Adam WHELAN & Mary McINERNEY. Born 20 Jul 1874 at 271 King St., Melbourne. Died 1903 in Melb W aged 27. Buried in Melb General, R/C BB540.

Third Generation

14. Helena Catherine Russell WHELAN. Daughter of Michael Joseph WHELAN & Catherine RUSSEL. Born 1883 in Hotham West. She married Edward Russell WARRINGTON, 1906 in Melb.

15. Jessie May WHELAN. Daughter of Michael Joseph WHELAN & Catherine RUSSEL. Born 1892 in Carlton N. Died 1893 in Coburg aged 11 Months.

16. John Stephen WHELAN. Son of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 15 Jan 1885 in Hotham (West Melb). Died 10 Apr 1964. Buried in Keilor Cemetery. He married Anne Teresa TULLY, 1911. They had one child, Hilary John.

17. Margaret WHELAN. Daughter of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 3 Mar 1886 in West Melbourne. Died 23 Feb 1979. She married Thomas Augustus HARDWICK, 12 Aug 1914 at St Brendan's in Flemington. They had the following children: Thomas, James, Reginald.

18. Mary Ellen WHELAN. Daughter of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 1 Dec 1888 in Brunswick. She married Frederick Thomas PORTER, 1909 in Brunswick. They had the following children: Mary, Margaret, Eileen, Kathleen, Alice.

19. Adam Francis WHELAN. Son of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 22 Nov 1889 in Maribyrnong. Died 1959 in Essendon, aged 70. Buried in Keilor, K374. Born Hampstead Rd Maribyrnong. He first married Theresa Florence Ada AMOTT, daughter of George William AMOTT & Rose Alice STAINES, 8 Dec 1915 in Kensington VIC. Born 18 Jan 1891 in Yardley St., Hobart. Died 1943 in Fitzroy aged 52. Buried in Keilor. Dressmaker. They had the following children: Marcia, Kevin, Brian. Two years after Flo's death, he married Sylvia LANG.

20. James WHELAN. Son of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 9 Apr 1891 in Maidstone (Maribyrnong). Died 18 May 1966. Buried in Fawkner, R/C E370. He married Ella Jane NEALE in 1914 She was born 1894, died 1963, and buried in Fawkner, R/C E370. They had the following children: James, Linus, Irene, Leo, Maureen and Patrick.

21. Michael WHELAN. Son of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 31 Jan 1893 in Maidstone. Died 30 Jun 1978 in Melbourne. Buried in Keilor Compt L. He married Bertha HILDEBRAND, daughter of George HILDEBRAND & Ellen BALLANTYNE, 29 Jul 1916 in Ascot Vale. Born 29 Dec 1894 in Melbourne, died 25 Sep 1978. Buried in Keilor Compt L. They had the following children: George, Ellen, Laurence, Kenneth, Bernard and Barry.

22. Kathleen Veronica WHELAN. Daughter of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 29 Sep 1895 in Maidstone. She married Leonard PARKINSON. They had one child, Louis.

23. Patrick Joseph WHELAN. Son of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 28 Feb 1898 in Footscray. Died 3 Aug 1921 aged 23. Buried in Footscray, R/C A984.

24. Thomas Aloysius WHELAN. Son of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 10 Mar 1900 in Maidstone (Maribyrnong). Died 10 Jun 1993. Buried in Footscray, R/C A985.

25. Joseph Peter WHELAN. Son of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 20 Jul 1902 in Footscray. Died 5 Oct 1959 in Footscray aged 56. Buried in Footscray, R/C A985. Lived 7 White st., Maribyrnong. He married Caroline Mary CLANCY, daughter of James Joseph CLANCY & Clara ROMANOFF. Born About 1901. Died 3 May 1956 in Melb, aged 55.

26. Eileen Monica WHELAN. Daughter of Patrick WHELAN & Margaret CLANCY. Born 15 Jan 1905 in Maidstone (Maribyrnong). Died 20 Oct 1987. Buried in Footscray. Died 1987. She married Hilary Francis TULLY, 1927. Buried in Footscray. They had two children, Therese and Margaret.

27. Mary Rose GAROOD. Daughter of Frederick Charles GAROOD & Mary Ann WHELAN. Born 1881 in Melbourne.

28. Ethel Annie GAROOD. Daughter of Frederick Charles GAROOD & Mary Ann WHELAN. Born 1882 in Melbourne. (Sister Ludovic)

29. Frederick John GAROOD. Son of Frederick Charles GAROOD & Mary Ann WHELAN. Born 1884 in Melbourne.

31. Francis James WHELAN. Son of Adam WHELAN & Margaret BUCKLEY. Born 1895 in Melbourne West. He married Marion STANLEY in 1924 in Melbourne. He died in December 1969; there were no children of the marriage.

32. Walter Thomas WHELAN. Son of Adam WHELAN & Margaret BUCKLEY. Born 15 May 1897 in North Melbourne. He married Ita Elizabeth O'CONNELL in 1919 in Berwick #9398. He served in the 60th Battalion AIF in World War One. Walter
