About me.

I'm Tony Whelan and I live in Australia's federal capital, Canberra with my (same-sex) partner. I'm a retired administrator and Information Technology professional.

I am an atheist and whilst I respect people's right to believe in an after-life, it's irrational and ridiculous to me.

"Because there is no cosmic point to the life that each of us perceives on this distant bit of dust at galaxy's edge, all the more reason for us to maintain in proper balance what we have here. Because there is nothing else. No thing. This is it. And quite enough, all in all."  (Gore Vidal, 1925- 2012)

As for those who claim their religion or ideology is sacred and above criticism:

"Even a superstitious man has certain inalienable rights.  He has a right to harbour and indulge his imbecilities as long as he pleases, provided only he does not try to inflict them upon other men by force.  He has a right to argue for them as eloquently as he can, in season and out of season ... But ... he has no right to be protected against the free criticism of those who do not hold them.  He has no right to demand that they be treated as sacred.  He has no right to preach them without challenge." (HL Mencken, 1880-1956)

Puritanism, wrote H.L. Mencken, is "the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy."
